In the west it seems it’s all the rage at the moment to build houses from shipping containers. However, throughout all of Kyrgyzstan it’s old news and we have seen shipping containers being reused in all manner of creative ways.

Mostly they have been refashioned as shops and garage units; with windows and doors cut out of the thick steel. Often these openings have then be resealed from the elements with pvc windows and doors. We’ve seen shipping containers cut up to become flat fences and driveway doors; ones that have been completely hidden behind tiles and brick claddings; some fashioned so as to catch river fish; containers abutting houses to become extensions; containers on top of concrete structures to become the second floor; container shopping precincts and container bazaars.
Shipping containers that have been: welded, cut, annexed, sliced, joined, stuck, fitted, painted, disjointed, clad, sealed, dissected, recycled…..
Grand Designs indeed.
