Taking the long way home from Japan to Frome, UK

Kyrgyzstan Route

Sadly, our time in Kyrgyzstan is just about to end….. We’re currently in the second city, Osh, and gearing up to set off for the Tajikistan border tomorrow, aiming to cross on Tuesday.

On the trip so far, not only has Kyrgyzstan been the most difficult country to spell, it’s also been the most beautiful. The mountains here are just amazing and the network of tracks that have enabled us to go way up into the hills equally so. Once again the car has performed beyond our expectations and will be treated to a car wash in the morning before we set off.

Russia Route: Stage 4

At the last update we were celebrating Clare’s birthday in style at the Hotel Central in Barnaul, Russia. Unfortunately, one night at the hotel turned into two – I won’t bore you with the gory details, but let’s just say the services of a reliable bathroom were required.

I think we both would’ve liked to stay another two nights in Barnaul, but sadly the budget wouldn’t stretch that far so we set off south for the Kazakh border. The intention was to camp fairly nearby ready to be first in the queue in the morning. As things turned out we didn’t really see anywhere we fancied worth camping so continued into Kazakhstan, crossing the border sometime around 7pm…..

[Stats: On this leg we travelled 1148km and reached a maximum height of 2490m]

Mongolia Route: Stage 3

An update with mixed emotions today…. on the one hand we’re both a bit sad as the time has almost come to say goodbye to Mongolia – we arrived at Olgiy today, just 120km from the Russian border. On the other hand, it’s a happy day as not only have we had a great time, but Totty has proved herself to be entirely suitable for the road conditions here and survived in style.

Since the last update we’ve passed through desert (more camels!), mountains and grassy steppe. We’ve camped by rivers, alpine lakes, on mountain-tops and in the middle of desert wasteland.

It’s been fun 🙂

We’ll probably stay for a day or two here in Olgiy – they have supermarkets (beer!) and a Turkish Restaurant (hoummous!) – to catch up with things on the internet. Afterwards we’ll drive to the border and spend some time in the Altai region of Russia before crossing into Kazakhstan.
